5 TIPS: DEALING WITH TEENAGE SKIN

However hard you try, it is very difficult to avoid spots during the period that you are a teenager. They appear for many reasons, diet, stress level, hormones, pollution, the list goes on and there are lots of ways you can choose to deal with them. Some people ignore them, others squeeze them (not the best option and it is very gross) and then there are the people like me who try to minimise them and then find a prevention method. The question is, which person are you? More to the point, during the few years that I have been a teenager I have had to deal with my fair share of spots (as I type, there are a few on my face right now) and sometimes it can feel like you will never have clear skin again. Here are a few tips on how to deal with and prevent them...

1. MAINTAINING A BALANCED DIET

There are many ideas surrounding how much your diet contributes to problems in your skin and I am in two minds about it. I have found that having a good balanced diet, 5 fruits and vegetables or more every day and trying not to have too much sugar or greasy foods on a regular basis (however tempting they look) has reduced the amount of spots I get. However, spots do appear for other reasons too and one of the main reasons for my spots is stress. Unfortunately there is no way you can prevent spots altogether, but research has shown that drinking 2 litres of water every day can improve the appearance of your skin and I have also seen results with this and I am sure you will do too.

2. REMOVE MAKE-UP PROPERLY

If you wear make-up like me, the most important thing you can do is to remove it before you go to bed. My favourite method is to use the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water on a cotton pad, one cotton pad for each eye and then one for the rest of the face. Making sure all of your make-up is removed prevents it building up and blocking pores which is another cause of spots. The Garnier Micellar Water is a very inexpensive way to do this and gently removes the make-up from your skin without irritating your eyes or the skin.

3. WASH YOUR FACE REGULARLY

Buying a gentle face wash and using it daily or every other day will remove any excess oils from your skin from overnight and prevent the blockage of pores. One of my favourites is the Freederm Sensitive Face Wash and I try to use it every morning (although that doesn't always happen). I apply a small amount to my face in upwards circular motions and then remove using a warm flannel.

4. TAKE CARE

I cannot stress how important it is for you to take care of the skin on your face and also your neck. Moisturise daily using a light moisturiser in the morning containing SPF to stop UV damage and a more rich one in the evening to replenish your skin overnight. I have a few favourite moisturisers that I like to use on a daily basis. In the mornings I use a combination of the Garnier Moisture Match Mattifying Fresh Cream and the Simple Protecting Moisture Cream, however in the evening, I have currently been enjoying the Simple Vital Vitamin Night Cream which has a much thicker and rich consistency compared to the refreshing one from Garnier. The Simple Protecting Moisture Cream contains SPF protection which is particularly important during the Summer months.

5. AVOID HARSH PRODUCTS

I stick to brands like Simple, Garnier and Nivea whose products contain no harsh ingredients which could irritate the skin further. Try to choose a product that contains no perfume which your skin may have a reaction to.

    1. Thank you Nicole! I know how you feel about maintaining a healthy diet haha. All I would say from my own experiences is to try to swap unhealthy snacks (biscuits and chocolate bars) to healthy ones such as fruit and vegetables :)
      I hope this helps!
